One of my recent commissions has been to work on a spirit house photographed by a diplomat client during her tour of duty in Thailand.

Now posted back home to Europe, she commissioned this reminder of exotic locations for her office wall.

What’s a spirit house?

Although most Thais are Buddhists, animist and Hindu elements are very strong influences in everyday life. Thais believe each plot of land has its own spirit of the place and so to placate the spirit whose land they have built on, when Thais build a house or shop or office block, they also build a house for the spirit of the place. These houses are tended daily with offerings of food and drink, colourful flower garlands and sweet-smelling incense.
